I always thought these were horrifically ugly and I don’t understand why some people hold them in such high esteem.

They have a cool design story. IIRC the designers went to Palm Springs and just made a car. No engineers, no bullshit, just what they wanted. With the right context its beautiful ... to me.
Also how the hood bulge runs into the gauge surround? Perfect.
Its not for everyone and thats why its good.

It was a hail Mary penned on a bar napkin by one of the greatest designers in history and brought to production in record time by a company on the brink of failure. Furthermore, it was fast. Crazy fast. It shattered 29 land speed records at Bonneville. Studebaker was known for unconventional design and building cars that looked like nothing else, but if you can't appreciate the aesthetic you can appreciate the performance.

That hood bulge is very cool.
It sounds like a cool idea. But there’s something in the front, and those weird sticky outy fendery things on either side. And that open eyed gaze.

I have always loved the front part of Avanti’s design but the same cannot be said about the rear half of the car.
